Investigators
Ipsit Vahia, MD
Ipsit Vahia, MD, is a geriatric psychiatrist, clinician, and researcher. He is the interim chief of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and director of Digital Psychiatry Translation at McLean Hospital. He is also director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program and the Technology and Aging Laboratory. His research focuses on the use of technology and informatics in the assessment and management of older adults and currently, he oversees a clinical and research program on aging, behavior, and technology. He has published extensively in major international journals and textbooks.

Dr. Vahia serves on the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Council on Geriatric Psychiatry and the Geriatric Psychiatry Committee of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has served on the board of directors of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) and on the editorial boards of five journals including his current role as social media editor of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards including the 2016 AAGP Barry Lebowitz Award and the 2014 APA Hartford Jeste Award.
David G. Harper, PhD
David G. Harper, PhD, is the associate director for research for the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at McLean Hospital. He is also an assistant professor in psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Harper’s research focuses on the behavioral symptoms of neurodegenerative illnesses. He is author of numerous journal articles and has presented national and internationally on this topic.
Arkadiy Stolyar, MD
After graduating from medical school in 1970, Arkadiy Stolyar, MD, spent the next twenty years as an emergency medicine physician and became interested in psychiatry after moving to the United States. Upon completion of his training, he began working in McLean Hospital as a geriatric psychiatrist in the geriatric psychiatry programs. He is currently the medical director of the Older Adult Program.
Dr. Stolyar also pursues his interest in forensic psychiatry and clinical research. He has participated in more than 90 clinical trials.
Regan Patrick, PhD
Dr. Regan Patrick received his PhD in psychology from McMaster University, where his research examining the cognitive and neural mechanisms of schizophrenia was funded by the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). He went on to complete an APA-accredited internship at the Medical University of South Carolina, with an emphasis in neuropsychological assessment and research. Dr. Patrick then completed a fellowship in adult and geriatric neuropsychology at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Patrick has continued at McLean Hospital and now holds a clinical and research position within the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and the Neuropsychology Department. His clinical work focuses on neuropsychological and psychodiagnostic assessment in adult and geriatric patients. His research uses cognitive and brain imaging techniques to better understand the causes and consequences of psychiatric and neurocognitive disorders.
James Wilkins, MD, DPhil
James M. Wilkins, MD, DPhil, is a geriatric psychiatrist and medical director of the Cognitive Neuropsychiatry Program at McLean Hospital. Dr. Wilkins’ clinical interests include care of people with dementia and their families. His academic interests lie at the interface of geriatric psychiatry and bioethics with a focus on the ethical aspects of decision-making, particularly surrogate decision-making for people with dementia.

Saeed Hashem, MD
Dr. Saeed Hashem is an academic Geriatric psychiatrist at McLean Hospital and an Instructor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical school with expertise in working with older adults and memory disorders.
He earned his medical degree in 2010 from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, where he also completed his residency training in Neurology and Psychiatry. During his residency, he obtained a Master of Science (MSc) in Clinical Neuroscience with honors, with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases. After working briefly as an Assistant Lecturer of Psychiatry and an outpatient psychiatrist at Ain Shams University, he moved to NY where he re-trained as a resident of Psychiatry, an administrative chief resident of Psychiatry, and a clinical/research fellow of Geriatric Psychiatry & Alzheimer's disease at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. His commitment to advancing public health led him to pursue additional certification as a Certified in Public Health (CPH) in Geriatrics with honors from the School of Public Health at SUNY Downstate.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hashem has been actively involved in research, education, and clinical practice. His scholarly endeavors have focused on psychopharmacology, health promotion, education of primary care providers on geriatric care, and the utility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the clinical care of older adults.
Currently, Dr. Hashem serves as a geriatric psychiatrist in the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic (GOPC) and the Memory Disorders Assessment Clinic (MDAC) at McLean Hospital, South Belknap building. He also works as a clinical researcher and a sub-investigator in a variety of clinical trials within the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program (GPRP) - with a focus on treatments for treatment-resistant mood disorders in older adults and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD).
Alexis Freedberg, MD
Alexis Freedberg, MD, is a geriatric psychiatrist specializing in the complex medical and behavioral needs of older adults. Prior to coming to McLean, she oversaw clinical training as core psychiatry faculty at Cambridge Health Alliance, was an associate professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine, an associate program director for the psychiatry residency at Tufts University, and the associate medical director of inpatient geriatric medical psychiatry at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Freedberg earned an award at Tufts for outstanding faculty teaching. As medical director of behavioral health for Perfect Health, she leads a team providing mental health care for frail homebound older adults with complex medical needs, utilizing a primary care integration platform to improve access and outcomes. Her clinical expertise spans acute and community settings, including hospitals, ECT services, assisted living facilities, and patients’ homes.
Lydia Cho, PhD, ABPP
Lydia Cho, PhD, ABPP, is board certified in clinical neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Teachers College, where she provided psychodynamic play therapy to children and adolescents, and psychodynamic interventions to adults. She gained practicum experiences in neuropsychological and psychodiagnostic assessments on adult and forensic patients at Bellevue Hospital. On internship at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System in Brooklyn, New York, she worked with substance abuse and older adult populations, providing psychotherapy and neuropsychological assessments.
Dr. Cho completed the Geropsychology Fellowship at the VA Boston Healthcare System and gained further expertise on the Neuropsychology Post-Doctoral Fellowship at McLean Hospital. She has continued at McLean Hospital as a staff psychologist/neuropsychologist and thoroughly enjoys assessing neurocognitive functioning, clarifying psychiatric diagnoses, conferring with interdisciplinary treatment teams, and supervising post-doctoral fellows.
Ariel Warren, MSN, AGNP-BC
Ariel Warren MSN AGNP-BC, is a full-time adult-geriatric nurse practitioner in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry. Her work is focused on memory evaluations and follow up dementia care at McLean’s memory clinic. She is also involved in research projects and as a sub-investigator for clinical trials.
Ariel completed her BSN at New York University Medical Center and her MSN at Hunter College. She previously worked at New York University Medical Center’s Pearl Barlow Memory clinic where she also split her time between clinical care and research. Her interest is focused on providing broad spectrum neurodegenerative care, as well as following patients longitudinally clinically and research focused during their disease spectrum.
Elise Welton, PsyD
Elise I. Welton, PsyD, is a clinical neuropsychologist specializing in the evaluation of adult and geriatric patients presenting with cognitive changes in the context of neurological, medical, and psychiatric illness. Dr. Welton is a staff psychologist and director of the Neuropsychology Practicum in McLean’s Neuropsychology Department. She enjoys integrating results from neuropsychological and psychodiagnostic measures to help patients and their providers gain insight into domains of functioning which may serve as sources of strength, as well as those which may be the target of intervention.
She received training in neuropsychology and psychodynamic therapy at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. Dr. Welton was also trained in dementia clinics at Columbia University and Weill-Cornell Medical Center, and continued neuropsychology training at the Manhattan VAMC. She completed a neuropsychology-emphasis internship at the Miami VAMC, then fulfilled a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center where she gained experienced assessing children ages 8-18, in addition to adult/geriatric cognitive evaluations.
Jennifer Holiman, MSN, APRN/CNP, PMHNP-BC
Jennifer is a full-time Geriatric Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry. Her clinical work focuses primarily on outpatient psychopharmacological management in the older adult population. She also performs clinical assessments for ongoing research projects and provides oversight as a sub-investigator for multiple clinical trials in McLean’s Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program.
Jennifer completed her undergraduate nursing degree at Loma Linda University School of Nursing in 2011 and her advanced practice nursing degree at Regis College in 2019. During her time at Regis College, she was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Jennifer also completed part of her student training at Mclean Hospital's Cognitive Neuropsychiatry Unit and Hill Center for Women.
She is a board certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and an active member in the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). Jennifer is also a member of the Nursing Research McLean Group, and her research interests include neuropsychiatric and behavioral management in patients with dementia.
Marie Clouqueur, LICSW, MSW, MA
Marie Clouqueur, LICSW, MSW, MA leads the dementia support program in Division of Geriatrics. Her clinical work provides group and individual psychotherapy to improve caregiver resilience and to support people living with dementia. She is involved in research on dementia caregivers and in training dementia care professionals. Marie additionally co-leads the diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the Division. Prior to her current role, Marie worked in community mental health, residential and inpatient settings, all of which is informed by years of ongoing volunteer work with marginalized populations. Marie holds a BA from Middlebury College and completed a dual master program in Clinical Social Work and Theology at Boston College.

Abdoulaye Kouyate
Abdoulaye Kouyate is currently a Senior Admin & Business Operation Manager for the Geriatrics Division at MGB McLean Hospital.

Abdoulaye Kouyate's professional journey spans over 20 years, during which he has made significant contributions to accounting, finance, and research administration. His most recent role before joining us was as an Associate Director of Post-award at Joslin Diabetes, where he led a team in managing grants and contracts, providing crucial research support to Principal Investigators. Prior to this, he served as the director of administration and finance at Boston University’s Department of Global Health, a role that allowed him to further hone his leadership and financial management skills. He has also held positions as a post-award manager and supervisor of A/R and billing, both at the University of Massachusetts, where he demonstrated his expertise in financial management and operations.

Kouyate earned his Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Accounting at Northeastern University. He received a Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance certificate from the American Management Association and an Award of Excellence from the Boston University School of Public Health (Voted by his peers and colleagues for his leadership and doing beyond his role and responsibilities in helping the department).

Outside of his professional commitments, Kouyate is a dedicated leader in his Guinean community in Massachusetts and throughout the USA. He’s a founder of the Boston youth and adult travel soccer team, a testament to his commitment to fostering community engagement and youth development.
Emily Fiske
Emily joined the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program in July 2023. She graduated from Southern New Hampshire University in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a concentration in social psychology, and minors in economics and criminal justice. Emily is passionate about mental healthcare and is eager to grow her career in healthcare operations at McLean Hospital.  
Keegan Lant
Keegan Lant graduated from Plymouth State University with honors and a BS in Psychology with a minor in creative writing in 2020. Her undergraduate research explored the effect of fearful, angry, happy, and neutral expressions on the conjunction error phenomena. She also change detection in famous and non-famous individuals. Keegan joined the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program in May 2020 and is the head study coordinator on one of our industry sponsored clinical trials, Embark. She also works on other studies in the program investigating Alzheimer's Disease and geriatric mood disorders. She plans to pursue a career in healthcare. In her free time, Keegan enjoys writing, reading and dancing.
Julia Kimball
Julia Kimball is a clinical research assistant in the Technology and Aging Lab, a sub-lab of the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program at McLean Hospital in Massachusetts. She is currently involved with research studies involving virtual reality and mindfulness, implanting augmented reality into dementia care, and detecting early medication side effects using wearable devices. She is also involved in caregiver support groups, focusing on connection and grief support. She hopes to continue this focus by going to school for a master's in social work in 2024. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA.
Rosain Ozonsi
Rosain graduated from Tufts University with a BS in Clinical Psychology. During her time at Tufts, she participated in multiracial research at the Social Identity and Stigma Lab under Dr. Jessica Remedios. She currently is a Senior Clinical Research Assistant at the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program at McLean Hospital. She currently leads investigator initiated studies focused on discovering novel treatments for behavioral symptoms related to Alzheimer’s Dementia. Her interests lie in exploring more about generational trauma within immigrant African families and discovering strategies to diversify the field of psychology and clinical research.
Amaal Mahamed
Amaal joined the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program as a Clinical Research Assistant in September 2022. She graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Psychology and a pre-medical track. Amaal will be working on a variety of studies including a longitudinal mood disorder study following participants with mood disorders, particularly those with Bipolar and Major Depressive Disorders, a pilot study examining the link between attention/executive function, inflammation, treatment resistance in older adults with treatment-refractory depression, and an intervention clinical trial targeting amyloid plaque, to stop or slow the potential disease progression in participants with early stages of Alzheimer’s. In the future, Amaal plans to pursue a career in clinical psychology.
Edward De La Cruz
Edward De La Cruz began his role as a Clinical Research Assistant in the Technology and Aging Lab, part of the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program at McLean Hospital, in July 2024. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island in May 2024, with a B.S. in Biological Sciences. He has previously participated in research as an undergraduate research assistant at the University of Rhode Island, as well a student visitor in the Technology and Aging Lab. Edward is currently contributing to two of our studies, NRAD and ADAPT. He aspires to pursue a career in geriatrics and palliative medicine.
Sarah Howie
Sarah joined the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program in July 2023. She graduated from Cal Poly SLO in 2023 with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Economics. Sarah has conducted previous research at both Cal Poly SLO and UC Berkeley regarding memory and cognitive development. Sarah is currently working on two of our clinical trials, Clarity-AD and NRAD, as well as a study focusing on using ECT as a possible treatment option for behavioral and mood symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. After her time at McLean, Sarah plans on pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology. 
Emily Kim
Emily joined the Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program as a Clinical Research Assistant in July 2024. She graduated from UMass Amherst with honors and a BS in Biochemistry with a minor in Psychology. Her undergraduate research focused on examining the effects of overnight sleep on memory and learning in toddlers. Emily is currently involved in studies about emotion regulation in individuals with depression, bipolar disorder, amnesic mild cognitive impairment, or mild Alzheimer’s disease, as well as exploring novel treatments for behavioral symptoms related to Alzheimer’s disease. She plans to pursue a career in psychiatry.
